This book tells the story of the East London Group, which achieved huge commercial success and media coverage in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Inspired by the charismatic teacher John Cooper, its artists achieved shows at the Whitechapel Gallery, the Tate Gallery, in the provinces and annual exhibitions in the West End. By 1936 two Grouppainters were showing at the Venice Biennale. They were mostly working class, realist painters whose formal education had often stopped at elementary school. The East London Group's drawings and paintings show buildings, streets, and ways of life that no longer exist.
