This catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition held at the Royal Academy, London from 19 March to 14 June 1998. The icon represents a bridge between "heaven and earth" . Moscow, during the period covered by this exhibition, evolved from a principality to the capital of a major empire. Icon painting served to invest the grand dukes, and later the tsars, with divine legitimacy.
