The final volume (Vol IIID) has slightly heavier sunning to the left hand side of the front cover of the dustjacket. In addition, the dustjacket of Volume I has a repaired horizontal tear to the front of the jacket. The publication dates of the Volumes are as follows: Vol I 1978 (second printing with corrections), Vol IIA 1974, Vol IIB 1974, Vol IIIA 1977, Vol IIIB 1979, Vol IIIC 1982, Vol IIID 1982. Many b/w and occasional colour illustrations. The aim of this series of books was to picture an inventory and atlas of the mammals of East Africa. Both the variety of mammals and their distribution are manifestations of the evolutionary process and so it is evolution that this the central theme of the books. The books provide information on local names, breeding, measurements, and food as well as detailed anecdotes from the author's personal experience of animals.
