In this book the author concentrates on the High Victorian Movement as a development out of and a departure from the Gothic Revival. It grew from modest beginnings around 1850 to affect buildings throughout the country by the end of the next decade. The architectural writings of Pugin, Ruskin, Street and Gilbert Scott are examined. The main emphasis is on the work of the master-architects of the period, especially Butterfield, Scott, Street, William White and Burges, as well as on the early careers of Pearson, Bodley, Norman Shaw and many others.
