The plates in this edition have been reproduced from the original paintings of William Hooker commissioned by the Horticultural Society of London between 1815 and 1820, with the exception of six plates which are reproduced from engravings in Hooker's Pomona Londinensis (1816-1818). This was the first time that William Hooker's original paintings were gathered together, with the best of the engravings, for publication in volume form. A descriptive text by the botanichal scholar and gardener Frederick Roach traces the origins and history of each fruit and sicusses it horticulture and influence on modern varieties.
