In March 1942, Cecil Beaton was sent to the Near East for three months to collect material for certain reports and to take photographs for the Air Ministry and the Ministry of Information. During the trip, he jotted down notes with which on his return he created this book. It gives a brilliant impression of the Near Eastern panorama at an interesting and critical period - the months working up to the disaster of Tobruk and the retreat to El Alamein.
