This catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition held in Edinburgh during the International Festival, 1962. Conceived by William Morris and the 3rd Marquess of Bute, from 1912 to 1940 (apart from the period of the First World War) the company was under the personal supervision of the 4th marquess of Bute and produced monumental Scottish historical tapestries. In 1946, after the second World War the design policy of the company changed, and many contemporary artists were commissioned, including Edward Bawden, Louis Le Brocquy and Graham Sutherland. Later, Sir Basil Spence commissioned a tapestry for the new Coventry Cathedral, although the Cathedral committee turned it down, and the work was later carried out in France.
