On a Scale that Competes with the World: The Art of Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, Pincus, Robert L.
56 Pincus, Robert L. On a Scale that Competes with the World: The Art of Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz
Berkeley, Los Angeles, Oxford University of California Press 1990 0520067304 / 9780520067301 Hardcover Good Good Book 4to - over 9 - 12" tall
Black hardcover with title in white on front cover and spine. Condition: Good, with general light shelfwear to covers. Some light foxing to endpapers. Binding sound, no inscriptions. Dustjacket condition: Good, with light shelfwear and a few small repaired tears to edges of dustjacket. 122pp. 16 colour and 46 b/w illustrations. In this book, the author clarifies the importance of the Kienholzes work in American art history. Placing their art in a broad cultural context, he suggests that it is viewed against the backdrop of the soaring American optimism of the 19th century. The paintings of George Caleb Bingham and the writings of Walt Whitman are expressions of that spirit. In sharp contrast, the art of Edward Kienholz (1927-1994) and others of his generation radiates anger, with parallels in the writings of contemporaries such as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Norman Mailer. The anger springs from the perception that grand American ideals have been betrayed.
