In architecture he rivals Butterfield, Street and Norman Shaw. In furniture and stained glass he eclipses the finest work of Morris & Co. In jewellery and metalwork he is without rival, except perhaps for his hero Pugin. Scarce.

37 Wigley, Mark White Walls, Designer Dresses: The Fashioning of Modern Architecture
Cambridge, Massachusetts and London, England. The MIT Press 1995 0262231859 / 9780262231855 Hardcover Very Good Good Book 4to - over 9 - 12" tall

Dustjacket condition: Good, with general light shelfwear and a small repaired tear to top of cover where it meets the spine. 424pp. Many b/w illustrations. In an unusual reconsideration of modern architecture, the author explores a little discussed feature of modern architecture: white walls - which exemplify the stripping away of the decorative costumes worn by 19th century buildings. Wigley argues that modern buildings are not naked but that the white wall is itself a form of clothing. He draws on arguments about the relationship between clothing and architecture first formulated in the middle of the 19th century.
