Victorian Working Women: An Historical and Literary Study of Women in British Industries and Professions 1832-1850, Neff, Wanda Fraiken
26 Neff, Wanda Fraiken Victorian Working Women: An Historical and Literary Study of Women in British Industries and Professions 1832-1850
London Frank Cass & Co.Ltd. 1966 Hardcover Very Good Very Good Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall

Dustjacket condition: Very good, with very light shelfwear, and small patch of wear to lower left corner of front cover of dustjacket where a small circular sticker has been removed. 288pp. This study is aimed at those concerned with the changing role of working women in society. The plight of Victorian working women was brought alive in the literature of the time. The novels of Mrs Gaskell, the Bronte sisters, Thackeray, Dickens and others illustrate a growing sympathy with the fate of those women forced by circumstances to earn a living as a mill-hand, factory girl, dressmaker of governess. Drawing on these contemporary sources, the author gives an account of fact and fiction from which emerges an indictment of the condition of the Victorian working woman. Although originally written in 1929, it is still relevant today.
