Previous owners name on reverse of front endpaper. The glassine dusjacket is in fair condition, with a few chips and tears. Loosely inserted is a copy of the original purchase invoice for the book, purchased by the previous owner (an architect) directly from the Hemel Hempstead Development Corporation. 41pp. plus serveral pages of advertisements. This book gives a brief assessment of the design of the new town at Hemel Hempstead, one of fourteen planned after World War II as a contribution to solving the post-war housing problem, and also as an experiment to find a better way of living.

Binding sound. 203pp. Many b/w illustrations. In this book the author encourages the reader to look at the city as an entity which expresses certain ideas. He suggests that the individual monuments need to be looked at as part of a whole. The book includes sections on the city as a temple, colonial cities, the ideal cities of the Renaissance, the grand perspective, the Dutch contribution and Paris boulevards.
