The central theme of this book is the striving for universality as opposed to the individual and the particular. The paintings of De Stijl artists like Van Doesbury and Mondrian contiuned in theor, beyond the limits of the canvas their architecture sought to abolish the wall as the boundary between inteiror and exterior space. In contrast, each of Le Corbusier's buildings and paintings were a self-contained universe in themselves, held within a clear frame. Mies Van der Rohe fluctuated between the two ideals.

Also addressed are the issues of tradition and modernity in Mies's lifework through a careul analysis of several of his early houses.
