This book deals with the work of the teams of architects, engineers and quantity surveyors who make up the integrated design practice of Arup Associates from its inception in 1963 to the date of publication of the book, 1983. The practice is still running today. Projects mentioned include the Wolfson Building;Somerville Colleg, Oxford, HM naval Base, Dockyard Buildings, Porstmouth and Gateway House, Wiggins Teape (UK) Plc, Basingstoke (also known colloquially as the "Hanging Gardens of Basingstoke)".

Loosely laid in is a sheet of the prices achieved in the sale. 361pp. Many colour illustrations. This 147 item catalogue included some spectacular items, and the sale set a record for an English country house dispersal, It was also notorious for the dispute over the authenticity of lot 56, a pair of Louis XV porphyry and gilt-bronze two-handled vases attributed to Ennemond-Alexandre Petitot. Just before the end of the 19th century, a new architectural style emerged in England. It was a combination of ant-Victorianisem, of a return to traditional building techniques and materials, and of a dream of a settled and ordered society In this book, the author considers the works of the great mainstream English architects such as Newton, Lutyens, Voysey and Baker. There are careful studies of individual houses such as Bullers Wood by Ernest Newton and Standen by Philip Webb.

Philip Webb (1831-1915) was a close colleague and friend of William Morris, and a co-founder of the famous "Firm". He had a great influence on domestic architecture in England during the latter part of the 19th century and was the main proponent of the practical conservation policies of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Scarce.
