Softcover.(Stapled catalogue). Condition: Good, with light shelfwear to covers. Light foxing to corner of front cover. Binding sound, text clean, no inscriptions. Light sunning to text edges and light rusting to staples in centre. 16pp. 6 b/w plates. This catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition held in Edinburgh during the International Festival, 1962. Conceived by William Morris and the 3rd Marquess of Bute, from 1912 to 1940 (apart from the period of the First World War) the company was under the personal supervision of the 4th marquess of Bute and produced monumental Scottish historical tapestries. In 1946, after the second World War the design policy of the company changed, and many contemporary artists were commissioned, including Edward Bawden, Louis Le Brocquy and Graham Sutherland. Later, Sir Basil Spence commissioned a tapestry for the new Coventry Cathedral, although the Cathedral committee turned it down, and the work was later carried out in France. Fifth edition. Originally edited by Sir John F.W.Herschel, Bart, this edition edited by Sir Robert S.Ball (Royal Astronomer of Ireland). Dark blue cloth with blindstamped decoration to covers including an anchor to the centre of front and rear covers, and titles in gilt on spine. Printed red speckling to textblock edges. Condition: Good, with general light shelfwear to covers, including some light staining and light bumping to head and tail of spine and cover corners. Binding sound, text clean, no inscriptions. The title page has an ink stamp with a crown stating "supplied for the public service". 450pp. Three folding plates, the first two illustrate hydrography, and the third, plate C, being a chart of the world illustrating the mean direction of oceanic currents, with a little creasing and a few repaired tears. Chapters include sections on astronomy, hydrography, tides, terrestrial magnetism, meteorology, anthropology and geology by authors such as a Professor George H Darwin, Professor George F Fitzgerald and Professor Archibald Geikie. The book seems to have been an aid to gathering new information whilst naval officers were on voyages around the world. Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall

Condition: Good, covers have some shelfwear, with bumping to cover corners and head and tail of spine. The cloth of the spine has a small nick approx three inches down from the top. The date 1904 is written to the top of the front endpaper, no other inscriptions. The title page is beginning to come loose, and there is a small tear to the tissue guard of the frontispiece. Binding cracked internally in one place, otherwise sound. 348pp. Seventeen lithographic plates with colour frontispiece, and numerous b/w illustrations within text. The book, written when George Barnard was the art teacher at Rugby school, includes chapters on elementary practice, trees, foreground studies, sketching tours, lectures and miscellaneous papers. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall

The collection of work by Ernest Gimson, Ernest and Sidney Barnsley and Peter Waals described in this catalogue was started in 1919, the year of Gimson's death, when his widow presented to Leicester City Museum architectural drawings by Gimson for the new Federal Capital of Australia. Over the next twenty years several important gifts were received from Sydney Gimson and the nucleus of a fine collection was formed. This catalogue includes sections on furniture, chairs, plasterwork, metalwork, other designs and architecture, with an initial section on the history of the group.
