The second volume of a series of books called "Books for Scouts" (the other two titles are Camping and Pioneering and Scout Handicrafts). Pale blue cloth hardcover with pasted colour image of a scout climbing a signpost (to Daventry) on front cover, with title above. Title also in black on spine. Condition: Fair, Cover edges and spine quite worn, small triangular 1/2in. chunk missing from image on front cover, midway down on the left. Binding sound, previous owners name in pencil on fep. Endpapers and last page of text quite browned. 96pp. 5 b/w photographic plates, inc. frontispiece. The book includes chapters on How to Qualify for Badges, The Scout as Handyman and Tools and How to use Them. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall

This book was a precursor to Peter Pan, and introduces his character and mythology.

Brick red/brown cloth, with titles in gilt on spines. No dustjackets. Condition: Good, although covers are shelfworn and spine and corners lightly bumped. Condition: Good, bindings sound, text clean. Some cockling to edge of frontispieces to both books. Light browning to page edges. Volume 1 has a watermark to the spine and back cover, not affecting text in any way. 446pp (Vol 1) and 336 plates (Vol II), mostly b/w, several in colour. Both volumes have been stamped and numbered in error at the bindery of the University of Chicago Library, i.e. a neat stamp on the reverse of the title page and and a small number stamped in blue on the first page of text in each book. The error is described in pencil thus: "stamped and numbered by mistake at University of Chicago Library. Books bound for FH at University of C libraries bindery and sent to accession department in error". Printed on "papier velin", one of 900 un-numbered copies. A catalogue of 15th to 19th century childrens books. Scarce. Images can be sent on request. NB: Text is in French throughout. Size: 4to - over 9" - 12" tall

Hardcover. Condition: Good, with very light shelfwear to covers. Previous owners bookplate on front endpaper together with a list of Puffin Picture books possibly printed in 1945 (pencil inscription states 1945) also stuck down. The list has been cut in half and stuck down so that it is impossible to see the reverse. Just before the contents page, a Puffin bookplate is also inserted, glued onto a separate piece of paper. Binding sound. 216pp. Many colour illustrations. This book was first published in 2010 in an edition of 1,100 copies of which 100 were case-bound, numbered and signed by the author. This copy is no.38 of the 100 special case-bound copies. Eventually running to 120 titles, the Puffin Picture Books were launched in the most inauspicious of wartime conditions in 1940. This study not only examines these Puffins, but looks at the journey Noel Carrington took in arriving at the series.
