London Authority of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty 1886 Cloth Good No Jacket Book 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall 
Fifth edition. Originally edited by Sir John F.W.Herschel, Bart, this edition edited by Sir Robert S.Ball (Royal Astronomer of Ireland). Dark blue cloth with blindstamped decoration to covers including an anchor to the centre of front and rear covers, and titles in gilt on spine. Printed red speckling to textblock edges. Condition: Good, with general light shelfwear to covers, including some light staining and light bumping to head and tail of spine and cover corners. Binding sound, text clean, no inscriptions. The title page has an ink stamp with a crown stating "supplied for the public service". 450pp. Three folding plates, the first two illustrate hydrography, and the third, plate C, being a chart of the world illustrating the mean direction of oceanic currents, with a little creasing and a few repaired tears. Chapters include sections on astronomy, hydrography, tides, terrestrial magnetism, meteorology, anthropology and geology by authors such as a Professor George H Darwin, Professor George F Fitzgerald and Professor Archibald Geikie. The book seems to have been an aid to gathering new information whilst naval officers were on voyages around the world. Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall

Condition: Fair, spine has been rebacked (not recently), and has remains of a handwritten paper label with titles. Covers are generally faded and shelfworn. Binding cracked internally at the section where the preface begins, otherwise binding sound. No inscriptions. Occasional light foxing and soiling to text. 320pp. plus publishers list. Hand-coloured frontispiece and beautiful handcoloured illustrated vignettes to beginning of each chapter. Good reading/reference copy. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
