This book was published to accompany the exhibition of Hungarian Photography in the Twentieth Century held at the Royal Academy of Arts, London from 30 June to 2 October 2011. It examines how the photographers Brassai, Capa, Kertesz, Moholy-Nagy and Mukacsi revolutionised photojournalism and art photography in the first half of the 20th century, and is illustrated with their major works and a number by their contemporaries, in many cases using vintage prints from Hungarian collections.

Dustjacket condition: Fair to good, generally lightly shelfworn with a half inch chip missing to top of spine of jacket, and a 1.5 inch vertical tear to top of rear cover where it meets the spine. In March 1942, Cecil Beaton was sent to the Near East for three months to collect material for certain reports and to take photographs for the Air Ministry and the Ministry of Information. During the trip, he jotted down notes with which on his return he created this book. It gives a brilliant impression of the Near Eastern panorama at an interesting and critical period - the months working up to the disaster of Tobruk and the retreat to El Alamein. The Linked Ring was a group of prominent photographers that broke away from the Photographic Society of Great Britain in the late Victorian and early Edwardian period. Almost a secret society, it aimed to cater for those "who delight in phtogoraphy solely for its artistic capabilities". At the height of the movement, which was "unlinked" in 1910, there were seventy-four Links, including prominent photographers from America, Austria, Belgium, France and Germany, as well as Britain.
